Tom Herck © Egmond Dobbelaere

Tom Herck

A few years back, Tom Herck made headlines with a 60-ton house of cards construction depicting dictators. The installation caused so much controversy that the mayor decided to censor it. Nevertheless, it quickly won an international award. With his ‘Holy Cow’ Herck also kicked up a storm when he hung a crucified cow in a church. Social topics are the corner stone of this Belgian artist’s work.

During The Crystal Ship, Tom Herck unleashed his creativity on the fountain in front of Kursaal Oostende. The artwork later moved to the small pond in front of the community centre ‘OC De Blomme’. A five-euro note folded into an origami warship floats in a large glass bottle. In times of war the price of weapons drops and the cost of life-essential products rises. As a bottle of milk costs 5 Euros, so does a hand grenade.
